THE HIDDEN LIFE OF TREES: WHAT THEY FEEL, HOW THEY COMMUNICATE by Peter Wohlleben ~ A Book Review

“...............a tree can be only as strong as the forest that surrounds it.”

― Peter Wohlleben, The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate

The book is a complex and detailed account of how trees are interconnected, living as families, communicating with one another, and even "nursing" their offspring. The author details the complex reactions trees have when they are in danger and how they can warn other trees of impending, threatening pests. In addition, he explores how other organisms help (or hinder) the growth of trees and the impact that humans have upon forest growth and well-being (or lack thereof). The information contained therein is fascinating at times but reads too much like a college textbook to keep my attention for long periods. As a result, it took me far too long to finish the book. I wish the author could have been a bit more concise in his writing or perhaps I should have just watched the documentary. I do think it's an important book. As one who prefers to see trees left standing, the book reinforced my gut reaction to clear-cutting timber and disturbing old-growth forests.
