What a well written, delightful story written by Kate DiCamillo!
Despereaux, half the size of other mice, has big ears and was born with his eyes wide open. He is not at all like the other mice. While his siblings EAT the pages of books, Despereaux reads them! He is enthralled with a fairy tale about a Knight in shining armor who must save a beautiful, young princess. Then, Despereaux finds himself face to face with a real princess by the name of Pea and falls head over heels in love. The Princess finds herself in need of her own savior and little Despereaux's heart demands that he do all he can to save the love of his life.
Despereaux helps the reader understand how important it is to be comfortable in their own skin. He explores the transformative power of forgiveness, and finds that courage doesn't always manifest as a brave knight in shining armor. A timid mouse that doesn't give up, even when s0metimes paralyzed by fear, shows us the power of love that makes even the smallest of us courageous.
I gave this story four stars out of five on Goodreads.
